After residing in Canyon Lake for the last 17 years, Leigh and Ron Martel announced their move to Murrieta. “We have really enjoyed being part of this very active community, but with such a large home with four floors, we knew this move was inevitable,” Ron said. “We’re ready for a smaller home with no stairs.“

Since arriving in Canyon Lake in 2004, Leigh and Ron published over 800 movie reviews for The Friday Flyer, attended nearly every Travel Club Dinner-Dance, and served six years on the SDSU Aztec Parent Advisory Board, while their daughters, Angela and Teressa, attended and graduated from the university.

As former president of the Canyon Lake Fine Arts Guild, Ron developed and led the Holiday Harbor amphitheater proposal to the POA. In 2017, Ron was named Canyon Lake’s 2017 Citizen of the Year. “That was a momentous honor, but I was most proud when the Guild was named Canyon Lake’s 2018 Organization of the Year, as it was a genuine team effort by the entire Guild Board of Directors,” Ron said. “They deserve the recognition.”

Over the years, close friends attended one or more of the Martel’s many “Movie Nights” in their 30-seat home theater while others attended group visits to Leigh’s Turtle Town, a refuge for turtles and tortoises, in partnership with Animal Friends of the Valleys. The couple also hosted their home on the Woman’s Club Home Tour, twice.

Leigh and Ron have been married 42 years, having met in 1977 while working at IBM. “After Ron retired from IBM six years ago, I was hoping we’d slow down, but that didn’t happen,” Leigh said. “During the pandemic, we were forced to do that and discovered a leisurely lifestyle is the new normal we were both ready for.”

Ron said the best part about living in Canyon Lake is the people. “We can’t say enough good things about Canyon Lake, with its various clubs and amenities; however, the best part is definitely the people. We thank you all for your kindness and wish everyone good health, peace, and happiness.”
